Interactive MedEvac Aircraft in Virtual Reality

We developed a 3D data strategy for the AeroMedical Solutions team at Lufthansa Technik AG, which included creating a comprehensive digital twin of a typical aircraft cabin designed for medical evacuations. Next, we created a virtual reality application enabling an interactive tour of the digital twin. We are currently preparing this application for the Apple Vision Pro headset.

Challenge

Lufthansa Technik AeroMedical Solutions specialises in developing complex cabin modifications for the medical evacuation of large groups of people. Such aircraft were used in Europe during the pandemic to transfer intensive care patients to other hospitals, for example. Traditional presentations are not ideal for illustrating this technically complex undertaking and the required expertise, nor is it possible to offer tours of existing aircraft of this type.

Solution

We developed a realistic digital twin of a standard aeromedical cabin configuration. First, we created detailed still shots and a framework that enables customers to easily generate further renderings. Secondly, we developed a 3D application that enables interested parties and potential customers to navigate the virtual cabin. This application can be experienced as a VR demo for stationary use at trade fairs and showrooms. A second use case is the browser version, which facilitates remote meetings and offers great versatility.
